about

Singing Bowl is simultaneously an exercise, a meditation, and a reaction to being sequestered at home. It is liberating to begin the creative process with a declaration of disallowing any second guessing. Use every instrument available. Relearn your first instrument (in my case the clarinet). Put that old ribbon mic on the piano in the living room. The birds calling out in the morning are so damn beautiful. I had to record those things (the mourning doves cooing are my favorite). My daughter sounds amazing singing with that sampled choir. Mic up the mixing desk and pound on it. Crank up the low end. And yes, drone on the singing bowl.

The result is a ten track record. I don't sing a note! That has never happened before. Making it was meditative and necessary during this uncertain time. Music heals. I hope it helps you as it has me.

about

Bob Appel San Francisco, California

When Bob Appel isn't writing rock 'n' roll songs, he often thinks about how to use all the instruments, toys, trinkets, and nature sounds surrounding him in the studio. He says it is freeing, releasing him from the constraints of two guitars, drums, bass and an occasional B3 part.

The result is "Singing Bowl." Yes, the singing bowl makes an appearance, as do the birds outside Hazelnut Studios.
